Lisbon Highly Ranked by TripAdvisor

The American travel site TripAdvisor has placed the Portuguese capital in 11th position on its list of Europe’s 25 most popular places to visit.
Variety was a key word in the site’s rich appraisal of the city, stating that ‘from the 12th-century Sé cathedral to the modern bridges spanning the Tagus River, (and) from the 18th-century Águas Livres aqueduct to the futuristic Oriente Station, Lisbon traverses the ages’.
As far as sightseeing is concerned, the site recommends the ancient neighbourhoods of the ‘Moorish Alfama, home of the city's tallest hill, and 17th-century Bairro Alto with its hopping nightlife’.
The city’s pleasures, TripAdvisor adds, include ’museums, castles, open-air markets, funiculars and Fado music’ and its high placing on the list of Europe’s top destinations suggests that Lisbon today has, in many ways, more popular appeal than traditional favourites like Venice (listed in 12th position), Madrid (14th) and Vienna (17th).
